Response to the announcement of $85 million in Federal funding for new shelters in communities
Kahnawake, May 29th, 2020 – Quebec Native Women (QNW) welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement to provide $85 millions in funding to support new shelters for Indigenous women located in communities. It is indeed a recommendation that QNW had proposed before MMIW Inquiry, to the effect that there is an urgent need for new shelters in communities that do not have them.
“This announcement in time of confinement is welcomed with relief, as domestic violence against Indigenous women in Quebec has increased significantly since the obligation of confinement,” said Viviane Michel.
The fight against all forms of violence towards Indigenous women in Quebec has always been the priority of QNW. QNW will closely follow the developments in this matter.
